Church Stretton Croquet Club - an introduction
Church Stretton Croquet Club was established in 1992. Until 2005 the Club played at the Longmynd Hotel (now Longmynd House). When the lawn was needed for development, the Club was temporarily based at Acton Scott Hall by the kind invitation of Mr & Mrs Tom Acton. Following protracted negotiations with Church Stretton Town Council, in 2007 the Club was allotted a lawn in the Town Park. From 2012, a second lawn became available.
The Club principally plays Association Croquet. Through the season, from April to September, there are weekly club afternoons (on Tuesdays and Sundays) and on Monday evenings Golf Croquet is played. Ladder and Knockout competitions run throughout the year and the Club's calendar also includes a number of matches against other clubs in the West Midlands.
New members, both experienced players and those new to the game, are very welcome. For the latter, coaching is provided.
A sunny early June day encouraged more than two dozen Church Stretton residents and friends to expose themselves to the mysteries and attractions of croquet. Through six hours of very pleasant weather there was a steady stream of eager participants, with Club members on hand to explain the skills and intricacies of the game.
If you missed the day, you’re still welcome to try the sport; our season runs through April to the end of September with Club Afternoons on Tuesdays and Sundays.
